About

A post-war Vietnam, following the First Indochina War, was struggling to rebuild. The Geneva Accords had temporarily divided the country into North and South. The North, with its socialist government, was supported by the Soviet Union, China, and Eastern European countries, while the South’s political landscape was backed by the United States and its allies. In the North, music became a powerful tool to encourage people to engage in production and construction, with labor songs gaining widespread popularity. By adapting familiar folk melodies and rewriting their lyrics, these songs instilled a new spirit of hope for a peaceful and prosperous future. They also served a dual purpose: to build support for the long-term goal of reunifying the country by providing aid to the South. Music thus became a political front, with both sides influenced by external forces in their lyrics and arrangements.
The songs featured in this playlist are primarily from the album "Voice of Vietnam" recorded by the Peace Choir during a trip to China shortly after Hanoi, the capital of the North, regained its independence.
